From the You Know We Couldn’t Resist Posting This dept.
Have you ever dreamed of hacking the Gibson? Wearing rollerblades to a party? Playing a beta of Wipeout on a massive projection screen? Listening to Orbital’s Halcyon & On & On while spinning in a telephone booth wearing a virtual reality visor in Grand Central?
Now is your chance to come embrace the ridiculousness and imagination of Hackers the movie — a film that inspired a generation of internet enthusiasts.
We’re celebrating the 15th anniversary of the film’s premier with a cyberpunk fĂȘte on October 2nd 2010.
The party will be at an as-yet-undisclosed location in Williamsburg. Access and additional door prizes will be dictated by the level of your pledge to the Kickstarter project set up to cover the event’s costs, with excess funds going to the EFF.

A site called Adopt a Hacker has popped up which may be of interest to our out-of-town readers and prospective tourists, as well as those willing to let same crash at their place.
New York City is an amazing place to be right now. But if you’re an out-of-towner looking to join the fun, it may be tough to get started. New York’s hustle and bustle can be intimidating and finding a place to stay can be expensive. It’s a tight-knit scene, so you may need a helping hand to break in.
We can help.
When you apply to be ‘adopted,’ we’ll try to pair you with a welcoming member of the New York startup scene. They may extend a couch or a bed. Worst case, you’ll have someone interesting to grab a coffee with when you visit.
Either way, you’ll see New York through the eyes of a New Yorker.
So it’s basically CouchSurfing for the NYC startup scene. Neat!

We’ve gotten a bit of feedback from folks who mistook our previous posts, or read incorrect posts from elsewhere, taking them to mean today’s meeting was cancelled. Of course it was not; we – that is to say, Grey and myself, your friendly neighborhood website admins – were expressing that we wouldn’t be able to attend. There’s still a meeting going on, folks are there right now, and merriment is being made.
Next week’s extra meeting is just a little something set up because we foresaw enough people missing out today to make a rain date worth it; just as in the past when holidays and other extenuating circumstances conflicted with the normal meeting date and we’ve hung out the following week.
We apologize for any misunderstandings.

After getting in touch with some attendees who, like us, come into the city from out-of-town, we must announce that due to Hurricane Earl, we won’t be attending tomorrow’s meeting. With areas like coastal New Jersey, Connecticut, and Long Island where many of us bridge-and-tunnel types live expected to be hardest-hit by the storm, with the additional possibilities of mass-transit failure and Citigroup locking up early, we feel we’re better off not advising the trip in for the meeting. For those of you who feel you can safely get there and back again and are willing to defiantly get a meeting going regardless, best of luck! We’d love to see photos.
For the rest of us, we’ll have doing a make-up meeting next Friday, September 10th. We’ll meet up in Citigroup like always, though since we’ll probably have a smaller group things may wrap up earlier, traditions may be changed or abandoned. We’ll wing it, and we’d love to have you there winging it with us.
Who: Us, and hopefully you.
What: The NYC2600 meeting, make-up edition.
When: Friday, September 10, 5:00 PM ~ 7:00 PM?
Where: Citigroup Center, 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue
Why: To meet up, eat food, do stuff, and make up for some lost time!
See you there!
