Internet forums
There are many ways to keep in touch with people from our community.
Every day on the Internet sees countless forums and communities start and end, languish and thrive. While not all NYC2600 people are involved in the following, and involvement in the following is by no means limited to just our community, they are the closest to “official” forums we have.
We encourage you to look around and find ones besides these that you enjoy.
Web forums
- NYC2600 community at Livejournal - Our long-standing, low-traffic Livejournal community is maintained in part by the admin of this site, populated by a small handful of meeting regulars, and is probably the closest we’ve ever had to a dedicated NYC2600 web forum for ages. A Livejournal account is not required to comment on existing posts, but one is required to create new posts, and free to set up. You can also sign in with an OpenID.
- HOPE Talk - 2600’s official forum for the discussion of the past and future Hackers On Planet Earth conferences and related topics. While this forum is not NYC2600-specific, we feel it is of interest as it is 2600’s only official web forum, and HOPE takes place right in the middle of our turf and involves many of our regulars.
We’ve only got LiveJournal covered so far. If you are an NYC2600 regular who uses another social-networking website or similar service, and you know of (or would like to start) an NYC2600-specific community, forum, group, or other equivalent used by said service, please scroll down for the specifics on how to add it here!
Internet Relay Chat
2600 operates their own IRC server. Point your IRC client of choice to irc.2600.net and chat away.
As per the server’s usage guidelines, #nyc2600 is designated the “official” channel for our meeting-goers. To join in, type /join #nyc2600 once you’ve connected to the irc.2600.net server.
Other channels of interest include #2600 for general chat, and #offthehook and #offthewall for live listener chat during those shows’ broadcasts.
Please note that IRC is an unmoderated and uncensored forum. Here are some tips for survival:
- If you need help getting started with IRC, go to IRCHelp, an excellent site full of beginners’ guides, links to popular IRC clients, and more.
- If a 2600-related channel such as #2600 or #nyc2600 gets “taken over,” locks you out, or otherwise becomes unusable, you are encouraged to simply add one to the number and use a new channel at (for example) #nyc2601, #nyc2602, and so on as needed until things settle down.
- If your chosen channel is empty, you can start it yourself and wait for others to join you.
- If your channel seems to be full of “idlers,” you can either say hello and see if anyone is actually around, join in the idling fest and sit there until people feel like communicating again, or find another more active channel.
Add more forums!
Do you know of, or would you like to start, any other NYC2600-specific forums, groups, or other gathering points for us elsewhere on the Internet? Please contact us with the necessary details to add it to this page!
We only have a few small requirements for sites to be added to this list:
- The forum should be of particular interest to NYC2600 people, not just a general “hacker” or “New York City” forum. It must be at least obliquely centered on our local area and community. An on-topic subforum of a larger general forum is also okay.
- The forum should be operated or moderated by someone who at least occasionally attends NYC2600 meetings
- The forum should be kept as open for public perusal, joining, and participation as possible on whatever network or service it is a part of. We don’t wish it to be hidden, invite-only, or anything like that if it can be avoided.
