Sidepocket informs us that over on Facebook, the existing NYC2600 Alumni group was recently left without an admin. To remedy this and prevent similar occurrences in the future, Sidepocket has recreated NYC2600′s Facebook presence as a Fan Page, which allows for multiple admins as well as being easier to join and use.
So in technical terms, Facebook users are advised to ditch the old and busted and get in on the new hotness!
Interested users of Facebook and other social networks and online services are encouraged to check out our Internet Forums page, where you can find NYC2600 presences all over this great Internet of ours, or start new ones where needed.

Have you got old and useless junk that not even HAX can make useful again, just taking up space? Here’s a chance to free up that space for new and useful junk.
This Saturday, January 16, the Lower East Side Ecology Center and Tekserve are throwing another of their e-waste recycling events. Bring your old computers, printers, monitors, TVs, and other unwanted electronics to Tekserve on West 23rd St (between 6th and 7th aves) for recycling. In addition to the generally warm and fuzzy feeling associated with recycling in public, every participant gets a $25 coupon and a chance to win a new MacBook Air.
See Tekserve’s page about the event for details, and the full list of acceptable recyclables.

If you were at least week’s meeting, you might have been given a charming orange card alerting you to the existence of Alpha One Labs, New York City’s newest up-and-running hackerspace.
Psytek and the rest of the crew behind Alpha One Labs have gotten things going in practically no time. They’ve already got a physical space in Williamsburg, open meetings, open membership, and the first of their public classes will be happening soon. You can also follow Alpha One Labs on Twitter.
For more info on hackerspaces, visit hackerspaces.org.

Since many in our community seem to agree that there’s something to this newfangled Twitter business, we have decided to make it easier for the Twitterverse to follow the NYC2600 scene.
Check out @NYC2600 for our official mindless RSS-regurgitating bot account. Why a bot, you didn’t ask? Well, we already post everything we wish to announce via this site. This way we can sneak our posts into the microblogosphere without creating more work for us overtired admins.
Users of Twitter are also encouraged to use #nyc2600 as a hashtag in order to consolidate NYC2600-related tweets into one big happy microblogging amalgam, like so.

Local hackerspace NYC Resistor finds itself featured in a neat New York Times article, and up-and-coming hackerspace HTINK even gets a mention.
The worldwide hackerspace movement continues to do wonderful things, and it’s still just getting started. We at NYC2600.net would like to offer our congratulations and compliments to all who collaborate, locally and abroad, to bring their communities together in such a way.
