picMany of you already know about our long-standing community at Livejournal, so old-school that it predates this very site.

Of course, not everyone uses Livejournal these days. NYC2600 people can be found on a myriad of social networking and community sites all over the Web. How can they be found? This is where you come in.

Do you know of, or would you like to start, an NYC2600 forum, community, group, or equivalent gathering place on another social network or similar site on the Internet? If so, we’d love to know about it! Please contact us with the details necessary to add it to our Internet Forums page, so the rest of us NYC2600 folks can find our way over.

Vintage NYC in pictures

New York Library on opening dayThe Library of Congress has posted two collections of photographs to Flickr. The first is a collection of early color photographs from 1939-1944, and the second is a collection of black-and-white newspaper photos from 1910-1912. It’s worth noting that these photos are in the public domain.

The aim of this project is for the millions of Flickr users to tag and categorize the photos, relying on crowdsourcing and wisdom of the masses to complete what would otherwise be a massive undertaking with few failsafes. You can read more about the project in this Newsweek article.

We are particularly fascinated by the collection’s New York City photos, as well as the use of the Internet crowd to preserve and sort historical documents in such a manner.

BSoD

picAt the last meeting we had the pleasure of meeting some of the local crew of Bastard Sons of Dialup, a quite interesting and often brilliant Internet TV show by and for hackers.

These affable folks arrived bearing a small arsenal of gadgets to show-and-tell, including a really cool point-and-shoot wireless CCTV scanner which drew our resident meeting photographers like flies, as our August meeting photos will attest.

BSoD started out well last year, and it gets better with every episode. Check out the in-depth tutorials, interviews, and other goodies on their episode list.
